Charles Wesley Benefield was born March 12, 1932 in Ozark, Alabama and he passed away on January 12, 2020. Mr. Benefield attended Auburn University and obtained a Bachelors Degree in Architecture, where he gained employment with Edwards Drafting in Chicago, IL. He enlisted in the United States Army where he served as an officer for 7 years, where two of those years were served in France. He then took a job with Mr. John Portman where he relocated his family to Atlanta area in 1961. While working for Mr. Portman, Mr. Benefield helped with the design of the Peachtree Plaza, Detroit Plaza, as well as designs in the San Francisco area.
He is preceded in death by his brother A.L. Bennefield where he served in WWII as Lt. Col. in the United States Air Force as a Post Master; brother-in-law Sonny Ballard where he served in WWII as a Col. in the United States Air Force for 35 years; and ex-wife Sally Benefield.
He is survived by his wife Dee McFall Benefield; two daughters, Laura Benefield and Sommer (Paul) Sobbin; five sons, Charles (Belanda) Benefield, Keith and wife, John (Angela) Benefield, Blake Benefield, and Matt Benefield; several grandchildren as well as step grandchildren and great grand children; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
