George Clark Whitaker, Jr. was born in Hart County, Georgia to George Clark Whitaker,
Sr. and Mozelle Scott Whitaker. George graduated from Americus High School where he
excelled academically and was a three sport athlete. He earned an appointment to the Air
Force Academy, served five years in the Air Force. Following the Air Force, George
moved to Atlanta where he graduated from Georgia State University with a Bachelor of
Science degree. He later met and married Sharon Mabry.
George and Sharon raised their daughters, Kasi and Kelli, in Stone Mountain, GA. George
was a very involved dad. He coached his daughters' softball teams through high school
and served as an assistant high school baseball and fastpitch softball coach at Stone
Mountain High School. He made friends wherever he went with his outgoing personality
and infectious laugh. George was never without a book and loved spending time with
Sharon at the beach. He was a dedicated son, loving husband, doting father and
grandfather, and a truly loyal friend. George passed away quietly at his home on
December 19, 2020, shortly after being diagnosed with Lymphoma. He was preceded in
death by his parents and his granddaughter, Addison Lynn Roam. He is survived by his wife,
Sharon, his daughters Kasi Barfield and Kelli Chamblee, and four of his grandchildren,
Callie and Gibson Barfield and Rusk and Maverick Roam. A memorial service will be
announced at a later date when circumstances permit. Gifts to the Leukemia & Lymphoma
