Inger Elizabeth Simmons, 65, of Marietta, GA passed on April 22, 2020 in Atlanta, GA from a short but courageous battle with gall bladder cancer.
Memorial services and dedication ceremony for immediate family will be held at 2:00 pm EST, Tuesday April 28 at Cheatham Memorial Park in Marietta, GA with The Rev. Idalia Craig, retired Episcopal priest, Diocese of New Jersey, officiating. Arrangements by Southern Cremations & Funerals.
Inger was born in Spartanburg, SC to Clifton Earl Simmons and Etla (Dowdy) Simmons on February 18, 1955. She was one of seven siblings, one brother and five sisters. She graduated from Hampton University in 1977 with a degree in Broadcast Journalism. Inger settled in Toledo, OH shortly after graduating college where she spent more than 35 years. She worked in the Information Technology field for AT&T and Dana Corporation, where she rose the ranks to become one of few African American women to achieve a Director title. Inger also took pride in being a successful minority business owner in the service field, opening Odella’s Washland which faithfully served the Toledo, OH community for over 10 years. But, of all successes Inger mastered, her sons, James and Shawn, by far were her pride and joy! As a single mother, Inger always bragged about her accomplished, young men and the families they had built. She would proudly joke that she would always be known as “Jimmy and Shawn’s Mom.” Inger was always an exceptional mother, daughter, sister, grandma and friend who provided sound advice to whomever needed it. Her larger-than-life smile and laugh closely matched her zest for life. Later in life, Inger’s passion turned to her grandchildren, gardening, bird watching, trying new hobbies, theatre and traveling. Her backyard garden was meticulously cultivated over several years which was the backdrop of many celebrations, get togethers and mornings with her beloved grandchildren. Retiring in 2017 helped fuel Inger’s blossoming love of bird watching and travel, which were often combined. She was able to visit many new places over the last three years including Morocco, National Parks, Egypt, London, Paris, Greece, Rome, New Mexico and Maine to name a few. Inger recently relocated to Georgia, where she was excited to live closer to the sunshine, family and have many more adventures. She was so thankful she was able to spend her last months with her family right by her side.
Inger is preceded in death by Clifton Earl Simmons (father) and Clifton Earl Simmons, Jr. (brother)
Inger is left to be cherished by her mother: Etla Simmons, sons: James (Melandee) Canady, III, Shawn (Amanda) Canady, sisters: Idalia Craig, Sylvia (Louis) Robinson, Vicky (Henry) Logan, Patricia (Harry) Tallman and Cynthia (Stanley) Jones, her beloved grandchildren: Claudia, Chloe, Clarabelle, Camilla, Cruiz, Simone and James “JC” Canady, IV and many loving nieces & nephews.

Created to love and be loved, created to shine with an inspiring, one-of-a-kind light in our world. Here’s to my friend, Inger, and the effervescent memory of a life well lived! Paulette Shaw Temple
Jimmy and Shawn, my condolences to you and your extended family on the homegoing of Inger. I don’t know if you remember me, but I am one of Inger’s Hampton classmates and I spent quite a bit of time at your house in Toledo. It was an honor to call Inger my friend, and just like she took care of you, she looked after me, too. I have nothing but wonderful, loved-filled memories of Inger – her smile, her kindness, her devotion to the both of you. We lost touch over the years, but I never lost the grateful love I have for her. All is well, she is alright and at rest. Remember her spirit and her life as the gift it was. God bless you all. Hello Simmons Family, I’m sharing my heartfelt condolences to you for your loss of Inga Binga as some of us referred to her since our Freshman year at Hampton Institute. I shared the same corridor with her and many others back in 1977. She was a treasure to know and will surely be missed. God bless you for having such a wonderful daughter, sister, mother and friend who touched your lives and ours. I hope that you guys can understand or deal with God’s decision and are able to manage your world around him taking an angel from us. To God be the glory, RIP Inger. Donna Smith, Houston TX
I have to many memories to count! All I know is she was always there for me and my mom ( Addie) whenever we needed her! She had a way of calming the room soon as she entered it. She always had a smile and plan to make everything ok. The dictionary doesn’t have enough words to express how much you are loved and will be missed! Rest peacefully Love always Jan, Jade, Nicole and James
My condolences to the family. I met Inger in 1999, when she hired me at Dana. She was a supervisor, a colleague and a friend. I would not be where I am or who I am today if it were not for Inger. She was a blessing to those that knew her. I will always remember her with a smile.
I fondly remember warmth and friendliness whenever I saw Inger. May she rest in peace. Theresa Wells, HU Class of ’77.

Hello– I don’t know if you remember me, but I remember the Simmons family from long ago when they lived in Kendall Park, NJ, just up the hill from Tiffin Road where my family lived. I still have family there– Joanne (Huff) McFarlane brought our family home. I am writing to say how sad I was to read that Inger has passed away. Reading her obituary this morning let me know how full her life was. I remember her big, bright smile, and her infectious laugh! To “Dolly” (as we knew her back then) and the entire family: May God continue to comfort you and continue to grant you very special memories of Inger. One one of my recent visits to Tiffin Road, I glanced at the road where you used to live long ago, and thought about your family. Fondly, Jackie Huff, Ewing, NJ
To the Simmons family, I was so sad to hear of Inger’s passing when I reconnected this week with some childhood friends from Kendall Park, NJ. The amazing thing was I have been thinking a lot about her lately and had decided I was going to begin to search for her. She was my best friend in high school and her family was like family to us. My mother had passed away and her mom was like a mom to me. I remember learning so much about culture, strong family and great food! their home was a warm and caring place that took in four more children who needed mothering. I am not surprised at all when I read about my friend as an adult and all she accomplished! I feel like I still know her and I am so proud to have known her. I finally know where she is now and Who she is with and know she is still smiling big and blessing us with her presence. May God bless all of you and give you her peace. Love you.
