John D. Hundley, Sr.

January 12, 1943 – May 23, 2026

Early Life

John D. Hundley, Sr. lived a life of quiet devotion to his family, his country, and his faith. He was born the ninth child of Bishop Isaac Harrison Hundley and Mother Elizabeth Finney Hundley on January 12, 1943, in Anguilla, Mississippi. John accepted Christ at an early age. He attended Henry Weathers High School in Rolling Fork, Mississippi.

In 1963, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed at Naval Air Station Kingsville where he met his best friend of 60 years and the woman who would become his wife. After receiving an honorable discharge, John earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from UC San Diego in 1971, then launched into civil service completing a five-year internship as a Contract Specialist at McClellan Air Force Base, marking the beginning of 16 years there and the start of a remarkable career.

In 1978, John married Millie A. Roberson. Together, they built a blended family in Rancho Cordova, California, with John Jr., Bryan, Vonnie, and Disa. He and Millie also gladly opened their home to two of his nephews and her niece. He showed up fully as a dad — coaching little league, cheering at games, helping with homework, and supporting his children in whatever way they needed. He was a faithful member of North Highlands Community Church of God in Christ in North Highlands, California, serving as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and Finance Committee Chair. He was also a keeper of family history, dedicated to preserving the Hundley legacy and reunion traditions for generations to come.

A Career of Distinction

In 1987, the family relocated to San Antonio, Texas to be closer to Millie’s mother following a sudden stroke. What began as a reluctant move became a gift, deepening family bonds and accelerating John’s career. Over his ten years at Kelly Air Force Base he earned four promotions, moving from Branch Chief to Deputy Director of Contracting. He ultimately reached GS-15 — the highest non-executive grade in federal civil service — leading 7 divisions, 492 civilian and military personnel, and managing an annual budget exceeding $3.5 billion. He valued education and sharpened his leadership through a Master’s in Procurement and Acquisition Management from Webster University, Program for Executives at Carnegie Mellon University Graduate School of Industrial Administration, and studies at the USAF Air War College and Air Command and Staff College.

During this time, John was also blessed to meet his son Randall and his family. The years apart did not keep them from forming a real and lasting bond. It was a reflection of who John was — a man whose love for family ran deep.

John and Millie’s next move took them to Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, Georgia, where John served as Division Chief and the first Black GS-15 at the base. He orchestrated a $10 billion contract — the largest ever awarded at Robins. He continued to make time for his faith and joined Beulahland Baptist Church in Macon, Georgia pastored by Dr. E. Dewey Smith. John and Millie left Macon for Atlanta to plant roots for retirement and joined Greater Travelers Rest Baptist Church, rejoining Pastor E. Dewey Smith.

Named Federal Manager of the Year and recipient of the Outstanding Civilian Career Service Award in 2003, John retired that same year after 40 years of distinguished service. Just a few years later he took a role he could not refuse at the Pentagon because, simply put, he really enjoyed the work. After six years, he was finally ready to retire for good.

The Sweet Life

In retirement, John filled his time with the people and things he loved most. He was always available to his grandchildren — for advice, support, a road trip, or whatever they wanted or needed “Papa” to do, just as he had been with his children. He was affectionately called “Mr. John” by some and was easily the family favorite uncle and brother-in-law.

He served as President of the homeowners association board, chaired the Landscape Committee, volunteered annually with the AARP Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs, and remained passionate about reinstating a Tuskegee Airmen memorial in San Antonio, Texas — a cause he first championed in the late 1990s and carried until his final days.

When he wasn’t serving the community, you could find him tending his flower beds and garden, keeping his yard in pristine condition, attending Braves games, watching the Spurs (on mute — yes, he enjoyed TV with the volume off), traveling with Millie, playing dominoes, attending family gatherings, and walking the lake and hills in his neighborhood. Over the last two years, he valiantly cared for Millie through an unexpected illness, maintaining his trademark calm and bright smile.

Homegoing

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Earnestine Hundley Whittington, Rosie Lee Hundley Smith, Martha Hundley Zewalk, Dorothy Mae Hundley Marshall, Edgar Jake Hundley, Curtis Hundley, Shirley L. Hundley Stokes, and William Clinton Hundley; son Randall E. Hundley and daughter Mandisa Hundley.

John leaves to cherish his loving memory his beloved wife Millie, brother Gloster Allen Hundley (Ethel), sons John D. Hundley Jr. and Bryan K. Hundley (Andrea), daughter Coralyn “Vonnie” Hundley Finney, 11 grandchildren: Monica (Alvis), John, Bryan, Briana, Brittney, Blake (Isabella), Tatyana, Mark, Bryn, Brandon, Brooklynn and two great-grandchildren: Matthew and Braylen, father-in-law, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.

His life was well lived, and we are honored to celebrate his legacy.
