Lucille Lutricia Rodgers was born in Aiken, South Carolina to Moses and Callie Holloman. She grew up on a farm in Beech Island, South Carolina and the family home in Augusta, GA. She was the second youngest in a family of three boys and seven girls. Lucille played basketball in her youth and teen years. She attended J. C. Bush Industrial School in Charleston, SC and the Atlantic City Vocational Beauty Culture School, graduating on June 19, 1939. Lucille was married to John Coleman Rodgers of Florence and Charleston, SC, on May 12, 1939 in Atlantic City, NJ. They moved to Philadelphia, PA where their children, Joan and Tinoa were born. In 1944, the family moved to Mt. Vernon, NY and then to Brooklyn, NY where their youngest daughter Renee was born in 1948. Lucille was a homemaker, beautician, interior designer, exceptional seamstress, and housewife. She and her husband, John, loved to dance at the Elks Club and play pinochle with friends. John and Lucille lived in St. Albans, NY from 1962 to 1996 when they moved to Union City, GA to be near daughters Joan and Renee. Lucille Rodgers is survived by her husband, John Coleman Rodgers; her three children, Joan C. Rodgers-Burton, Tinoa Bernard Rodgers, and Ren(c)e Rosalind Rodgers; two older sisters, Provia Eva Logan and Rachel Boyd; two grandchildren, Edmond D. Burton and Marian R. Burton-Hawkins; five grandchildren, Aliya Hannah Allen, Bryan Scott Burton, JeLesa Burton, Malachi Talib Hawkins, and Maya Hawkins; nephew, Frank Holloman of GA, & numerous nieces & nephews living throughout the United States. Services honoring Mrs. Rodgers will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, July 8, 2008 in the chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Tony Sullivan officiating.
