Mabel Johnson

January 1, 1940 ~ February 25, 2021

“Mabel Johnson” or MOM, a title she perfected! Although she had three girls many looked to her as a Mom. Mabel entered into her eternal rest on February 25, 2021. Mabel was born on January 1, 1940 in Metropolitan Hospital to the late Austin DeLegarde & Louise Johnson. Raised in New York City, she was 1 of 13 children- 6 brothers and 6 sisters. Mabel never married but she managed to single handedly raised three beautiful, strong Black women, Lorell, Marlene and Marion aka Tee. Although May didn’t obtain a traditional diploma she was determined to show her daughters the value of an education, she in turn went back to night school and obtain her diploma at the age of 33. May enjoyed a quiet life in Atlanta, Ga. As long as her children and grandchildren were around her she was content. Her favorite pastime was gambling; she enjoyed playing Poker, Pitty Pat and her all-time favorite Pokeno. She could hang at a casino or two as well. Everyone who knew May, knew her for her one-liners like, "I'm too pooped to pop", "happy as a flea on a dog's back", "please leave me alone" and "play with a puppy, they'll lick your face". When she said these lines, you knew exactly what she meant. Mabel will be deeply missed by so many; nieces, nephews, friends and family. (To many to list) We know that death leaves a heartache no one can heal, but love leaves a memory no one can steal. Left to cherish her memory are her loving Daughters: Lorell, Marlene (Edward-son-in law) and Marion (Jerry-son-in-law). Her Grandchildren: Qiana aka Boo, Al-Jamice aka Meshe, Danielle aka Dinko, Jasmine aka Jazzy, Tia, Jaymi, James Jr aka JJ and Tiffani and her Great-Grandchildren: Brandon, Janaiya, Keivan, Kyle, Timiya, Royal and Alijah. She also leaves to mourn her passing, her Sisters: Prestina, Leona, Avelyn, Elaine and Frances. Her Brothers: Charles-Frederick, Eugene, Joseph. May was preceded in death by her Mother and Father, as well as her Brothers; Prince, Eddie, Lionel, and her Sister: Caressa. As well as her Nephews and Nieces.
