Mrs. Suzanne M. Mauler

June 12, 1938 ~ August 28, 2013

Suzanne Metzger Mauler Suzanne Mauler, 75, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2013 in Marietta, GA. She was born in Binghamton, NY, June 12, 1938; the daughter of Stanley and Helen Metzger. Sue was a long term resident of Cortland, having moved to town as a child when her father became the Dean of Students at SUNY Cortland. She graduated from Cortland High School, attended Syracuse University for advertising design, Art Institute of Philadelphia and received her BA degree from SUNY Cortland. In 1959 Sue married George Mauler and the couple resided in Philadelphia until George finished his medical school training. Afterward they moved to Cortland so George could establish his medical practice, George Mauler, MD, Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Surgery. Sue was a compassionate and fun loving woman. Sue and George opened their home to many people from all walks of life. Sue's hospitality and generous nature, made all visitors feel more like friends than guests in their home. Whether it was a lake party for the local theater cast and crew, or an intimate gourmet dinner for four. All were welcome and unconditionally accepted. Sue and George were also charter members of the Cortland Repertory Theater, members of the Chamber of Commerce, as well as lending their support to many other various community groups and activities. Sue established, and co-owned Crown City Travel, located on Main Street in Cortland. Sue created dramatic window displays of travel scenes from around the world that delighted downtown shoppers. Sue and George's many travels included sailing with friends in the Caribbean, shopping for crafts in Indonesia and walking among the penguins in Antarctica; though her most cherished location was their cottage on Skaneateles Lake. After George passed away in 1990, Sue retired from the travel agency. Sue then followed her passion of business and art, opening The Spotted Giraffe, an import and local artisan specialty shop for unique gifts and home decor. This brought her joy for several years until she fully retired and moved to Venice, FL. Sue and her companion, Morris Bogard also of Cortland and Venice, continued their many valued friendships from Cortland, as well as nurturing new, near and dear friends in Venice. Sue became a member of the Venice Presbyterian Church, as well as becoming an avid golfer with Morrie by her side. Sue spent the final years of her life battling Alzheimer's disease and eventually moved to a memory care facility in Marietta, GA, near her daughter. Through the process she continued to express her art, her personal style, social personality, and remained the hostess for those residents and staff around her. Sue emboldened those around her even in her illness. Surviving her are her daughter, Teri Mauler of Groton, NY; her son, Chris Mauler of Homer, NY; her daughter, Lisa Brown of Marietta, GA; her son, Rockwell Mauler of Cortland, NY; and her brother, James Metzger of Warren, VT, and 3 grandchildren, Amanda, Goodwin and Grant. A memorial service will be held at Grace and Holy Spirit Church, in Cortland, NY, on Saturday, September 7th at 11am. A reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who wish, make a donation to the Cortland Repertory Theater.
