Norman Martin was born on April 14, 1938, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was the son of the late Edna and Louis Martin Jr. He attended Joseph S. Clarke Senior High School and Straight Business School where he studied Business Accounting. Upon reaching manhood, Norman served in the United States Navy and Reserves as a Diesel Mechanic for six years. Following his time in the Navy, he worked for the Housing Authority of New Orleans, where he retired after 38 years.
Norman was a true son of New Orleans. He loved the Culture, the Music, and especially his Creole food! He hosted many cookouts for his family and friends, and was known for his Crawfish Boils, Gumbo and Jambalaya! Seafood was his specialty because in the words of Norman himself, “I don’t eat nothing green!” He was a die-hard New Orleans Saints Fan. Norman also had a lifelong love of old cowboy westerns, bowling, fishing, and never left home without his jacket.
On January 30th 1960, he married Elizabeth François, and throughout his life, he became a father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Norman leaves behind to cherish his memories his wife, Elizabeth Martin, and his children. His sons: Norman (Charlotte) Martin, Charles (Linda) Martin, and Tony Martin. His daughters: Deanna (Raymond) Robertson, Kim (Alfredo) Rowe, Demetra (Carnell) Baldwin, Katherine (Mickey) Johnson, and Anita Whitney. His 11 grandchildren: Jessica, Charles Jr (Ginger), Janet (Brandon), Jared, Jasmine, Caitlyn, Christopher, Jihad, Justin, Edward, and Alaysia (whom he affectionately called Lay-Lay); and one great-granddaughter, Marie. He will also be dearly missed by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Louis Martin III; his sisters, Jaqueline Collins, Rosemary Smith, Edna Mae Smith, Anita Price, and his granddaughter, Jaimie Martin.
Norman Anthony Martin Sr. went to rest on April 20th, 2021 at the age of 83. He will always be remembered for his quick wit, his kind and generous nature, and his favorite saying:
“Self-Preservation: it’s the first law of Nature!”
The memorial service will be live streamed at 11 a.m. from Southern Cremations and Funerals at Holly Hill in Fairburn, GA on May 1, 2021.

My father was one of the most forgiving and caring people I know. He truly loved his family and friends. He will be missed. Visiting N.O. will never be the same without him there. I will always have him in my heart and will hear those infamous words of his “Self Preservation, it’s the first law of nature” especially when he didn’t want to do something.
