Marietta Southern Cremations & Funerals
Ricardo “Richard” Cabrera Repilado passed away peacefully on November 27, 2019 at the age of 92.
Ricardo is survived by his two daughters and sons-in-law; Laura Raymond (Ricky) of Longwood, Fl and Ana Drury (Mark) Marietta, GA. Three grandchildren Cristina Gonzalez, Ryan Raymond and Taylor Raymond – all of whom affectionately called him “Grumpypa.”
Richard was born on January 5, 1927 in Madrid, Spain to Ricardo Repilado Requeiferos and Ofelia Cabrera Benitez. Early in his life, the family moved to Havana, Cuba. As a graduate of the University of Virginia with a degree in French literature, Richard became a professor at his own private school in Havana. He was fluent in Spanish, French and English and even spoke a little bit of German – a fact the family did not know until his granddaughter Cristina moved to Berlin. He was also, throughout his life, a voracious student of history and filled with facts, a trait which he passed down to his grandsons Ryan and Taylor.
In 1960, Richard, his wife Laura Calmet, and their daughter Laura boarded the last freedom flight out of Cuba. He settled in Sanford, Florida where he resided the rest of his life. He was a lab manager at Florida Power and Light for XX years – or as he called it, Florida Flicker and Flash. He enjoyed sailing and was the family’s resident “tinkerer” of all things that needed fixing.
As his beloved nickname suggests, Grumpypa could often be just that: grumpy. But right below the surface of his husky voice and consternation was a family man, always present, always with an opinion and always quick with a comeback. When parting ways, he often would say, “Sure glad you got to see me!” And in this case, on behalf of his loving family, we can say that the pleasure was all ours.
Memorial service is scheduled for Jan 4th, 11 am at Knowles Chapel Winter Park, Florida
