Marietta Southern Cremations & Funerals
Robert Edwin “Smoke” Hornsby passed away and went to be with the Lord on November 25, 2020. Robert was born on January 28, 1950 and grew up in Jonesboro, GA and moved to Douglasville after he married. Robert is predeceased by his father, Robert Glen Hornsby, his mother, Evelyn Montina (Kidd) Hornsby and his sister, Linda Kay Bohart.
He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Sara Ann Candler Hornsby, his daughter, Shawnna Lynn (Michael Graham) and son, Robert Joshua (Heather Morris). He is lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Robert Preston-Scot, Wyatt and Braylen Graham; Kayleigh Morris; Bayleigh, Robert Grayson and Kenadee Hornsby along with numerous nieces and nephews. He loved his family and would daily share his dry sense of humor through a joke or story to get them to crack a smile or laugh.
Robert served in the Navy as Machinist’s Mate Petty Officer 3rd Class (MM3) and was stationed aboard the USS Compass Island (a classified research vessel) from May 1969 – April 1972 and was discharged from the Navy Reserve in May 1975. While on the USS Compass Island, he served as a fireman and was commended multiple times for his remarkable initiative that far exceeded others. He worked for Southern Bell/Bell South/AT&T for 33 years and then for the CWA Union for another 5 years as a Job Stewardess before he fully retired.
While his children were young, he enjoyed participating with them in recreational sports. He was an umpire for many years at Bill Arp Ball Park in Douglasville. He also served time being president of the Little League Association at Bill Arp and as a soccer coach. Most recently, he loved just watching his grandchildren participate in sports and spend time with them fishing and enjoying the outdoors. He played golf with the Taco Mac golf team and loved hanging out with his friends there after playing.
After Robert retired, he became a world traveler with his longtime friend John Kelley. They went to Bangkok, Paris, Ireland, Taipei, Bali, Dubai, Toronto, Sydney and all over the United States. Robert enjoyed traveling with Ann to Amsterdam celebrating their wedding anniversary as a gift from John. He cherished those memories and enjoyed sharing them with all his family and friends.
Due to COVID-19, there will be no service at this time and a celebration of Robert’s life will be held at a later date. Cards and condolences for the family may be offered at their home, 4703 Glenn Ridge Circle, Winston, GA 30187. In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made to the Something For Alex Foundation at www.somethingforalex.com, a nonprofit in memory of Robert’s nephew, Alex Newton.
