Celebration of Life for Sandra Lee Patterson (née Vilas)

Sandra Lee Patterson (née Vilas), lovingly known as “Sandi,” passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 5, 2026, at the age of 86. She was born on December 8, 1939, in Pierre, South Dakota.

Sandi lived life the way it should be lived—beautifully, fully, and always with a touch of flair. She didn’t just get dressed—she made an entrance. Every day was an opportunity to feel good, look good, and enjoy the people around her. Hair done, lipstick perfect, accessories thoughtfully chosen—Sandi believed in celebrating life, and she led by example.

She was often told she bore a striking resemblance to Elizabeth Taylor, and more than once she found herself being mistaken for the legendary actress while out and about—a story she never tired of sharing with a smile.

She loved the beach, her girlfriends, traveling, and meeting new people. Sandi had a gift for connection — she collected friends everywhere she went, and everyone loved her. She created a warm, welcoming home where family and friends gathered often. Many still cook her recipes, which means her love continues to be served at kitchen tables long after she’s gone.

Above all else, Sandi’s greatest joy was her family.

She shared nearly 67 years of marriage with her beloved husband, John Patterson Sr., whom she lovingly called “Papa.” Their marriage was one of devotion, humor, and deep partnership. John’s well-known “job” was carrying her pocketbook—sometimes with protest, but always with love.

Sandi was a proud and devoted mother. Her daughter Debi Stewart was not only her child but her best friend. Lori Batzel, who preceded her in death, remained forever in her heart. Her son, John “Bub” Patterson Jr., brought her endless pride and joy. Each of her children held a unique and cherished place in her life, and her love for them was constant and unwavering.

She is survived by her loving husband, John Patterson Sr.; her daughter, Debi Stewart (Jeff); her son, John “Bub” Patterson Jr.; her son-in-law, Tracy Batzel; her grandchildren, Jonica Stewart (Donnie), Brandon Stewart, Hope Coker (Reed), Jordyn Patterson, Jenna Patterson (Patrick), and John “Jack” Patterson; and her great-grandson, Daniel Stewart. She is also survived by extended family members and dear friends who were lucky enough to be part of her world.

Sandi’s life was full of laughter, connection, and style. She had a way of making ordinary moments feel like something worth celebrating—and she never missed a chance to celebrate the people she loved.

Somewhere, we like to imagine her perfectly put together, handbag in hand, already at the center of a joyful gathering.

She will be missed deeply, remembered fondly, and celebrated always.
