With heartfelt condolences,
My whole life I have thought of Uncle Shurrel as a man who loves his family. One of my earliest childhood memories was when me and my cousins Artie and Kenny were riding in the backseat of Uncle Shurrel’s dark green Dodge or Plymouth and Uncle Shurrel says” Hey y’all! Do you want to see a hundred miles per hour?” We said “Yes! Yes!” Aunt Marjorie looked at him like she knew what he was going to say. Then he pointed to the speedometer and said “Right there it is!” as he pointed to the number 100 on the speedometer. I don’t remember how fast we were going but it was not 100. Aunt Marjorie just shook her head and laughed. There would be many more good times like this. Uncle Shurrel and family would come up from Georgia often to spend time with family. Although he moved to Georgia to seek a better life for his family he never left his roots in Harnett County, NC behind. Sometimes when he and Aunt Marjorie would visit and we were not home you could tell if he had been there. He would do something silly like placing a flower pot on the hood of the car or on the doorstep so you would know Uncle Shurrel had been to visit. Uncle Shurrel did a lot for my self esteem in my life. When I got old enough to grow a beard he would say “I see you had to grow a beard to coverup all that ugly” but I know he said it with love. There is much more I could say however love and family that is what what I remember most about Uncle Shurrel. Rest easy Uncle Shurrel Love Johnny
